Omega-3 and DHA in pregnancy
During pregnancy and breastfeeding the need for DHA rises, because the baby needs it too.
What the EU says
Maternal DHA intake contributes to the normal brain and eye development of the foetus and breastfed infants. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 200 mg DHA in addition to the recommended daily omega-3 intake for adults (250 mg EPA + DHA).
Fish, but wisely
Small oily fish with low mercury, such as sardines or herring, are recommended. If you eat little fish, a purified fish oil or algae oil supplement is a practical option.
Doctor first
Discuss the choice of supplement and dose, including vitamin D, with your doctor. Do not combine an omega-3 oil with vitamin D3 with other vitamin D supplements without advice.
