Evidence instead of assumptions

You cannot feel your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. But it can be measured precisely.

A drop of blood is enough

The dried blood spot (DBS) method on filter paper. For fatty acid analysis it is comparable to a venous sample.

Independent laboratory

Vitas in Norway, a GMP-certified laboratory with 25 years of chromatography experience. The test is CE-marked under Directive 98/79/EC.

Numbers before and after

The first test shows your baseline, the follow-up test after 120 days the real change in numbers. You see both results side by side.

BalanceTest at-home test by Zinzino

Check your ratio at home and top up your daily omega-3 and vitamin D3

Why get tested

Long-term dietary imbalance

Modern diets contain far more omega-6 than omega-3. According to manufacturer data the European average without supplementation is about 15 : 1. Without a test you are only guessing where you are.

No guesswork

Measure your ratio before taking a supplement and take a follow-up test after 120 days. You will see the exact change in your laboratory results.

Easy, from home

No doctor's appointment and no waiting. Sampling takes less than a minute and you send the envelope by post.

How the test works

  1. 01

    Preparation

Wash your hands with soap and warm water and dry them. Tear off the part of the card with your test ID and keep it; without the ID you cannot access your result.

  2. 02

    Sampling

Swing your arm for 20 seconds, clean your finger with the wipe and prick it with the lancet. Fill the circles on the card with freely dripping blood without touching the paper.

  3. 03

    Drying and posting

Let the card dry flat for at least 10 minutes, put it in the protective pouch and post it to the laboratory. Register the ID on zinzinotest.com.

  4. 04

    Result

Within 10–20 days your result appears under your anonymous ID. Fill in the questionnaire to get the full analysis.

Product overview

BalanceTest is an at-home test that measures the fatty acid composition of your blood from a few drops taken from a fingertip. It uses the dried blood spot (DBS) method on Whatman® filter paper, which for fatty acid analysis is comparable in accuracy to a venous sample. Sampling takes less than a minute.

Key benefits
  • Easy sampling at home, no clinic visit
  • Measures 11 fatty acids in your blood
  • Shows your omega-6 and omega-3 balance and other markers
What the test measures

The test measures the share of 11 fatty acids: saturated, monounsaturated (omega-9) and polyunsaturated (omega-6 and omega-3). Each value is a percentage of the total and is compared with a target range based on a large group of people with a balanced diet.

Fatty acidGroup
Palmitic acid (PA), C16:0saturated
Stearic acid (SA), C18:0saturated
Oleic acid, C18:1omega-9
Linoleic acid, C18:2omega-6
Gamma-linolenic acid, C18:3omega-6
Dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA), C20:3omega-6
Arachidonic acid (AA), C20:4omega-6
Alpha-linolenic acid, C18:3omega-3
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), C20:5omega-3
Docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), C22:5omega-3
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), C22:6omega-3
How results are calculated

The sum of all 11 fatty acids counts as 100%. Seven of them are used for the six result markers: EPA, DHA, DPA (omega-3), AA and DGLA (omega-6) and the saturated palmitic (PA) and stearic (SA) acids.

Protection value

The average of three scores from 0 to 100: omega-6 share = (DGLA + AA) × 100 / (DGLA + AA + EPA + DPA + DHA), omega-3 level = EPA + DHA, and balance = AA / EPA. Ideally above 90. It describes fatty acid status, not overall health. With low EPA and DHA it can be very low or even zero.

Omega-3 index

The sum of the marine omega-3s EPA and DHA as a percentage. At least 8% is recommended, above 10% is desirable.

Omega-6 : omega-3 balance

AA divided by EPA, e.g. 3 : 1. The target is below 3 : 1. If it is higher, your diet is worth a look.

Cell membrane fluidity

Saturated fats relative to omega-3: (PA + SA) / (EPA + DHA). The target is below 4 : 1.

Mental strength

AA relative to EPA + DHA. The value should not exceed 1 : 1. DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function.

AA index

The share of the omega-6 arachidonic acid (AA). The usual range is 6.5–9.5%, with an optimum around 8.3%.

Certification

The test kit is CE-marked under European Directive 98/79/EC on in vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVD).

Laboratory

Samples are analysed by the independent Vitas laboratory in Norway, GMP-certified with 25 years of chromatography experience.

The test is anonymous: only you know your ID; neither the lab nor Zinzino know who sent the sample. Enter your ID on zinzinotest.com to see the result. With the questionnaire you get the full analysis, without it only the balance score.

Step-by-step instructions
  1. Wash your hands with soap, rinse with warm water and dry them.
  2. Take the card out of the paper envelope (keep the envelope). Tear off the KEEP part and photograph your test ID. Place the card circles up.
  3. Swing or shake your arm for 20 seconds to boost blood flow.
  4. Clean your fingertip (ideally the middle finger) with the alcohol wipe. Remove the lancet cap, place it on your finger and press until it clicks.
  5. Do not touch the filter paper.
  6. Fill the circles one at a time with freely dripping blood. Let the card dry flat for at least 10 minutes at room temperature.
  7. Put the card in the paper envelope and that in the metal pouch. Do not remove the desiccant.
  8. Put the pouch in the large addressed envelope, add stamps and post it. Register your test code on zinzinotest.com; the result is ready in 10–20 days.

Keep the KEEP part of the card. Without the ID you cannot access your result.

FAQ

Does sampling hurt?

Just a quick prick of the finger with a lancet, similar to a blood sugar check.

Who sees my results?

Only you. The test is anonymous; neither the lab nor Zinzino know who sent the sample. You find your result on zinzinotest.com by ID.

How long do I wait for the result?

Usually 10–20 days after the sample reaches the laboratory.

Why repeat the test after 120 days?

That is roughly how long red blood cells take to renew, and the test measures fatty acids in their membranes.

What if I lose my test ID?

Without the ID you cannot access your result, so photograph it right at the start and keep the KEEP part of the card.

Does the test replace a doctor's examination?

No. It shows your blood fatty acid status and is not a diagnosis. Discuss abnormal results with your doctor.

Stop guessing. Know your numbers.
